Mulund West Tragedy: Woman and 3-Year-Old Child Killed After Car Rams Into Pedestrians on Footpath Outside City of Joy

Mumbai | Mulund West | PNR News / Power Samachar

A horrific road accident outside the City of Joy residential complex on Cement Company Road in Mulund West has sparked outrage and grief across the locality after a speeding car lost control and rammed into pedestrians buying vegetables on the footpath. The tragic incident has now claimed two lives, including a woman and a 3-year-old child, while another woman remains injured and under treatment.

The accident took place on Thursday when a car exiting the main gate of City of Joy allegedly went out of control and crossed over to the opposite side of the road, crashing directly into a vegetable market operating on the footpath. At the time of the incident, several local residents and customers were purchasing vegetables in the area.

According to eyewitnesses, the elderly driver reportedly became confused while navigating through incoming traffic outside the society gate. In panic, he is believed to have accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to speed uncontrollably across the road before ploughing into pedestrians.

A woman died on the spot due to the severe impact of the collision. A 3-year-old child and another woman suffered serious injuries and were immediately rushed for medical treatment. The injured woman reportedly sustained a fractured hand and is undergoing treatment at Agrawal Hospital.

The child, who had sustained critical injuries, was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Bhandup West, where doctors made continuous efforts to save the young life. However, despite intensive treatment, the child succumbed to injuries, raising the death toll in the accident to two.

The incident created panic and chaos in the area, with a large crowd gathering at the accident site soon after the tragedy. Traffic movement on Cement Company Road remained heavily affected for several hours as Mulund Police reached the scene and initiated an investigation.

Following the accident, local residents raised serious concerns regarding road safety and visibility issues near the City of Joy main gate. Residents alleged that several decades-old giant trees located near the divider and opposite the society gate obstruct the visibility of motorists using the road, thereby increasing the possibility of accidents.

According to residents, when the City of Joy project was originally developed, there had been proposals for road widening and removal of certain trees to improve traffic flow and visibility. However, environmental activists and NGOs reportedly opposed the move in order to preserve the trees, leading to the issue remaining unresolved for years.

After the latest tragedy, residents have once again demanded immediate intervention from civic authorities. Citizens clarified that they are not demanding that the trees be cut down, but instead suggested that the massive trees be scientifically transplanted to safer open locations such as Sureshwar Patil Garden, where similar tree transplantation projects have reportedly been undertaken in the past.

Residents further pointed out that Cement Company Road serves as one of the busiest and shortest connecting routes between Mulund Check Naka and Mulund railway station. The stretch witnesses constant movement of autorickshaws, private vehicles, and daily commuters. Citizens fear that if TMT bus services are introduced on this route in the future, traffic congestion and safety risks could increase further unless urgent road widening and visibility improvements are undertaken.

The tragic deaths have triggered anger and mourning among local residents, many of whom are now demanding stricter traffic management measures, better urban planning, and immediate corrective action from the authorities before another major accident occurs.

Mulund Police are currently investigating the case, and further legal proceedings are underway.
