Mulund, Mumbai | 3 December 2025

In a striking display of dissent, Mumbai Congress activists on Tuesday staged an unusual protest at Mulund Railway Station by climbing into a giant makeshift dustbin to symbolically highlight what they called the Maharashtra Government’s “disregard” for the suburb. The protesters alleged that the ruling state government is “dumping” unwanted projects on Mulund without consulting its residents.

The agitation, led by Mumbai Congress Secretary Rajesh Ingle, targeted a series of ongoing and proposed government initiatives — including PAP housing projects, Dharavi rehabilitation allocations, casting yards, and pigeon-feeding zones — which, according to Congress, have no connection with the developmental needs of Mulund’s citizens.

“Mulund is not the State’s dumping ground,” says Congress

Congress functionaries claimed that hundreds of acres of land, including valuable salt pan parcels, have been handed over by the government “in haste” and “without public consultation”. They alleged that suggestions and objections from local residents were neither invited nor considered before clearing these large-scale projects.

“The speed at which these projects are being approved raises concerns that more such decisions will be imposed on Mulund — a traditional BJP stronghold,” activists said, accusing the state’s BJP-led government of treating the suburb as a “dustbin” for politically convenient projects.

Local BJP representatives under fire

The protestors also criticized local BJP elected representatives for their “complete silence” and failure to oppose these initiatives during their initial planning stages. According to the Congress delegation, this silence has enabled the government to “forcefully push” projects that allegedly do not address Mulund’s infrastructural or environmental needs.

Pollution, AQI decline blamed on ‘unregulated activity’

Referring to escalating air pollution in the area, Congress leaders highlighted that the combination of rapid housing redevelopment, government infrastructure works, and unregulated civic projects has led to a significant deterioration in Mulund’s air quality.

They claimed that the ongoing construction frenzy — much of it attributed to government-driven redevelopment and infra expansion — has caused a spike in dust, debris mismanagement, and overall environmental neglect.

Senior Congress leaders participate

Alongside Rajesh Ingle, several senior leaders and office-bearers participated in the demonstration. They included:

Ex-Municipal Councillor B.K. Tiwari

Dr. R.R. Singh, Uttam Gite – General Secretaries, Mumbai Congress

Bharat Soni – Spokesperson

Rakesh Raghavan, Santosh Sonawane, Manoj Sansare, Anil Singh, Arvind Yadav, Dhanlaxmi Nadar, Dharmesh Soni, Rakesh Nagar, Vipul Gogri, Nixon Marcelin, Ashish Hor, Rakesh Pandey, Sunil Jain, Bhima Reddy, among others.
